Huerto de la Cora is an associtaion to promote the implementation of Agroecology. Probably you are asking yourself what exactly Agroecology stands for? We can say it is a Science, not an ideology, for the development of agriculture in harmony with the ecosystems and the social and culture heritage. It is a kind of mixture of agrology, environment and antropology but we must state that to develop it the scientific method is the only tool used, and it is the consequence of research and investigations done by university professors. The opposite to Huerto de la Cora is Monsantos policy with Genetically Modified Seeds. These seeds represent the inadequate way to develope agriculture not taking into consideration the environment, culture and food sovereignty.
Huerto de la Cora tries to recover the local seeds for vegetables, which represent an inmense World heritage created during centuries and centuries of the Human kind, investigates the plants produced and distributes the seeds in a free open way among people interested in self gardening and food sovereign. They use the method of the arabic gardens in the islamic Spain from the VII to XIV century when theis culture managed to introduce so many vegetables in Europe coming from Asia - all sorts of garlic, onions, leaks, paprika, lettuce, carrot etc. Just think that the only original vegetable of Europe is cabbage. The rest is imported. This arabic garden is called Garden of La Cora or Huerto de la Cora. Huerto de la Cora has managed to find more than 500 species from different veggies from Spain. Next step was to gather seeds coming from the rest of the World, basically from America where we got also a big ammount of new products (potatoes, corn, tomatoes, avocados, etc).
Project:
So the second phase of this project is to create a new Garden or Huerto del Mundo or Graden of the World, which was actually sarted in 2013 by some volunteers from Spain, France and Germany in a Youth Exchange called Pilla la Semilla y Acribilla.
Huerto de la Cora is conected to the Universite Pablo Olavide of Sevillla. http://www.esenciatv.es/video.php?id=245
Work:
The volunteers will help to construct the different parts of Huerto del Mundo. That is moving stones, sand and cenment. That means constructing and aso planting. It means hard work, and devotion for the work been done. The idea is gathering volunteers that like constructing or that like agriculture but basicly volunteers motivated about the horrible consecuences of a policy which can lead us to a lost of food soveriegnety. Therefore work will be very hard, but at the same time very meaningfull.
Accommodation:
To be determinate but probably at a high school or sports centre. The living conditions are basic, please bring a sleeping bag and a mat as there is no camp beds. The centre is equipped with showers and WC. The volunteers will prepare their breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Location:
Jodar is a beatiful village located close to Jaen. The main economical activity is agriculture and it is located surrounded by the Natural Park of Sierra Magina which is a natural area with high quality lansdcape, pure and nearly virgin. Volunteers will have excellent possibilities to visit Cordoba/Granada or Seville and othe spots like Jaén (Arabic baths and cathedral), Ubeda and Baeza. There is also a chance of doing the hiking route through the Serrezuela and the Sierra Magina and even to have a parapente experience in Pegalajar Easy excursions to Granada, Cordoba and maybe Seville after the workcamp.
Terminal:
Granada-Jaen FGL (GRX). Others Malaga Costa del Sol (AGP), Sevilla (SVQ) and Madrid Adolfo Suarez Barajas (MAD).
Special requirements:
Motivation, interest in ecology and agriculture. Activists are more than welcome.
Take into consideration the following features:
- Participants are really asked to be very motivated. It is a project where volunteer work is NEEDED. - It will be hot in the day and hot in the night. The landscape of Jodar is dry. Be prepared for over 40º Celsius temperature. Nevertheless it will be possible to go to the river and swim.
« I would recommend participating in a workcamp, especially with VAP, who ensured that I found a project to suit me and provided essential training for me in preparation for my trip. Being part of a workcamp really is a life-changing experience, oh, and it looks great on your CV! »
