There are some ancient ruins in the park: this territory has been inhabited since the pre-Roman era and you can still observe pieces of polygonal walls (aka Cyclopean masonry ) built in the Iron Age. In the Middle Age, Roiate fell under control of the monastery of Subiaco and, according to the legend, Saint Benedict from Norcia left his mark on a stone nearby while lying on it. Ever since the IV century a church and then a convent was built to preserve this stone. The church, devoted to Saint Benedict himself, still exists. Rich natural, cultural and historical heritage ensures the constant interest of pilgrims and hikers in visiting this area thanks to several trekking footpaths across the natural park.
