Accomodation & food:
Holken camps will take place in the surroundings of two old (built in 1886 and 1931) schools in a small village. You can find old buildings, sauna, exhibition building, circus tent and circus wagons as well as a small coffee shop and flea market in the compound. The volunteers will be accommodated in a basic guest room and summer room on mattresses on the floor. It is possible to stay overnight in a tent also. The volunteers will cook and eat in the old school which has good kitchen facilities.

Holken camp is situated in the Southern Finland, 55 km from Helsinki to west. There is a direct bus from Helsinki to Inkoo. Inkoo is a small community by the sea and is located within beautiful archipelago and nature. The nearest small towns are located about 20 km from Holken. The nearest lake is about 7 km and grocery shop is about 3 km. Inkoo centre with grocery shop, cafeterias, and harbor is located from 5 km from the camps. There are bicycles in the camp. The volunteers can also go to forest to pick mushrooms, wild herbs and berries. The camp hostess is a biologist who will organize one evening activity related to food from forest. There will be a possibility for camp fire and artistic performances as well.

Volunteers will assist in maintaining the public places, painting and tidying and environmental tasks in Niva village area together with local people. The aim of this camp is cross-cultural learning and to bring multicultural atmosphere to Niva Village.

The accommodation is arranged in a hunting cabin. Cooking will be done by the volunteers themselves, ingredients will be provided by the host.

Niva is a small village, located 30km from a bigger town called Joensuu and it belongs to beautiful and peaceful North Karelia region in eastern Finland. The distance to Helsinki is about 400 kilometers. Joensuu can be reached from Helsinki by train and plane. During leisure time, various summer activities such as hiking and playing games with locals are possible and there will also be some sightseeing. The volunteers will have the chance to learn about local cultural heritage and traditions in Northern Karelia region.

The camp aims to include the volunteers in the landscape maintenance management. There are lots of areas where the tasks cannot be performed by machinery so the volunteers will work with the gardeners. The volunteers will perform visitor information tasks under the supervision of the staff. In the busy month of August the number of visitors can exceed 200 000 and majority of them are foreign. They have also penciled in joint activities with local operators, artists and artisans.

Suomenlinna is covering an area of 80 ha and consisting of 200 buildings and 6 km of defensive walls, the fortress stretches over six separate islands. The applicants need to write a one page motivation letter explaining why they would like to join the project, if they have any previous experience in WHvolunteering and what could be their contribution to the project.

Punkaharju is located in eastern Finland near Savonlinna and it takes about four hours by train from Helsinki. The school is situated in a location of superb natural beauty, right on the magnificent Punkaharju ridge. It is surrounded on both sides by lakes and magnificent scenery. The area offers excellent opportunities for a variety of nature and outdoor activities. The volunteers can also attend some Finnish language and culture lessons as well as join visits to local sights and events.
