World Masters Orienteering Championships WMOC 2016 held on 6-14.08 in Tallinn will be the largest sports event in Estonian history in terms of number of international participants as it will bring over 4000 sportsmen for the orienteering world championships. The task of hosting team is to provide excellent environment for the competition to make sure the participants can give their best every day. To accomplish this huge task around 400 volunteers are invited. Among them there is also international volunteers team from all over the world – you! More information on this event can be found here http://wmoc2016.ee/competition/program/
Work:
There are many different jobs to do and there will be 3 main areas and teams divided according to the tasks.
Construction teams - Building teams are responsible for setting up the whole infrastructure for the competitions. All venues need tents and signage, also tracks need to be set. The builders should be ready for light physical work in any weather, some of it at the early hours before the competition day starts.
Administration - Administrating such a large competition demands a lot of work. Participants have to be registered upon arrival in Tallinn, but also at every competition day and at the start of each track. We need to provide parking, children’s care as well as luggage services. These tasks call for people who are happy to communicate and provide customer service.
Guarding track points - Such a large international competition calls for strict rules. To make sure participants interpret the track in a straightforward manner, we need people along the track to supervise the performance. This task needs people with a patient mind and an ability to speak up in a loud voice when needed.
For all tasks above no prior orienteering experience is required. Volunteers are expected to work 6-7 hours per day in different time. At least two days over whole period will be free.
Accomodation and catering:
Volunteers will be provided with floor accommodation in the classromms or sporthall (will be specified later) for the whole duration of the event. Everyone should bring own sleeping bag. If you have a camping mattress, we recommend to bring your own as well. Toilets and showers are available both at the accommodation site and at the event centres. Volunteers will be provided with plenty of food and drinks during working days however not during days off. To more distant event locations bus transportation will be provided.
Location:
With half a million citizens, Tallinn is hardly a world metropolis. However: short distances and low traffic are advantages to cherish. Whether you have only few hours or few days, you get to experience a lot. Medieval Tallinn Old Town, one of the best preserved Hanseatic town centres in the world, where you can visit local galleries and museums, indulge in small cosy cafés or restaurants, is just a short walk away from the city business centre with modern towers, luxurious hotels, gourmet restaurants and shopping malls. Find out more on www.tallinn.ee
Leisure time:
All volunteers will have access to the culture programme and sightseeing tours that we provide for the event participants. Full list of tours available here: http://wmoc2016.ee/tourism/tours/ Everyone is also invited to the mid-week pub crawl, and the epic volunteer dance party to celebrate the end of the event.

« I would recommend participating in a workcamp, especially with VAP, who ensured that I found a project to suit me and provided essential training for me in preparation for my trip. Being part of a workcamp really is a life-changing experience, oh, and it looks great on your CV! »
