The village is known as Baan Kok Riang which is situated in Klong Hoi Khong district of Songkhla province, Southern Thailand. The approximate number of villages settling in this village is about 1,200 or 140 homes. Most of the villagers own fruit orchard and rubber plantation, and nearly all of them are Buddhist. There are a few Buddhist temples in the area and lots of rubber plantation lined up on the sides of the road. Some people living in the village commune for work to town for factories that export rubber and processed seafood products.
About the project:
We got to know this village by recommendation of the university club called Backpackers. They organized activities involving environmental preservation and activities with the community. All activities they did together with Baan Kok Riang villagers were planting trees at Pa Dam watershed waterfall, planting on the sides of the road and organizing activities with kids and adults in the village. Every time a good project that organized by them taken place in the village, DaLaa was always invited to be part of it. Up to the present, almost 7 years already, the university club has still been in contact with the community and launched good projects that meet the community’s need.
Why this camp in Baan Kok Riang village?
DaLaa’s way of working in volunteer recruitment adjusted for quite some time that we promote camps to international volunteers only when we receive requirements from our local partners or friends whom their projects can be trusted a good use for their communities. Same as this camp, we came across with it when we visited our old friends and villagers of Kok Riang named Mr. Kanong and Mr. Suthep, who were all the time great supporters when Backpackers’ camps taken place. They both described their motivation and possibility to turn their property into an Agricultural Learning Center of Baan Kok Riang Village. The land approximately covers 3,200 square meters where some vegetables and locally seasonal fruits like pineapple, jackfruit, longan, etc are grown. They would like to make this learning center as a community model and act as project initiators for villagers by growing non-chemical rice, vegetables, raising fish. They would like to convince new generations and people to be aware of NOT destroying nature, eating healthy vegetables which are free use of toxic chemicals and can just be grown in their backyards or unused property, for example. Thai people think it convenient to buy everything in a market which truly those vegetables and fruits are coated with dangerous chemicals. Concerning the would-be learning center in the future, the general landscape of the project site still looks very scattered with vegetation and tall trees. There’s one standing shabby-like, wooden house that is planned to turn it into the learning center, but it needs renovation as well as area adaptation. The slogan for this future learning center made up by the 2 hosts (Mr. Kanong and Mr. Suthep) is “Grow whatever edible for good health but no disturbing the nature”.
Activities:
•Renovate the house for the future Agricultural Learning Center of Baan Kok Riang Village •Shape up the scattered vegetation area for agricultural learning in the future •Organize activities with kids
Aims of project:
•To support the initiatives of this future Agricultural Learning Center of Baan Kok Riang village •To build a good relationship between volunteers and local people •To be part of Baan Kok Riang community •To let children be familiar with volunteers and learn in international/multi-cultural atmosphere

« I would recommend participating in a workcamp, especially with VAP, who ensured that I found a project to suit me and provided essential training for me in preparation for my trip. Being part of a workcamp really is a life-changing experience, oh, and it looks great on your CV! »
