In Yenping Old Street 142 elegant houses remain now. Most of them were built 80 years ago. In the past, Yenping Street was the town centre, every shop was open and busy, but now, most of the houses are empty and some are useless. The residents left and Yenping Street became silent. The local people have lost confidence therefore we are trying to promote Siluo culture and traditional articles to improve the life quality and self-respect over there. We want to keep the street alive as it is so classical and elegant.
We have done some repair work but still have a lot to do, so we would like to invite international friends to join us. It is not only voluntary work but also a good chance to experience Taiwan culture and a new life style.
Siluo workcamp is going to fix houses no.106 and no.81 in Yenping Street, cleaning, painting walls and repairing the floor is necessary. We will also set up a place for local cultural workshops. The place will be helpful to promote Siluo traditional culture as well.
During the project, we also plan to make one public art item. The volunteers will help the local artist to complete this challenge, and Master Shinn will teach volunteers how to do it.
Aim and Work:
A) To repair Heritage House No.106 and No.81. Volunteers will repair the windows, doors and floor of the house as well as paint the house. B) Making a public art item. Volunteers will learn how to it. S: The future plans of Old Street.
Accommodation:
We will stay in Siluo International Volunteer House. The house is offered by the Siluo township government, it's a new place with comfortable beds, air conditioning, toilets, hot showers and a wide yard with a beautiful view. Volunteers for sure will have a great time there. We will use the kitchen in House No.81 which is the Siluo backpacker house and take breaks there instead of cooking in the volunteer house. The backpacker house is just near by the working place and it belongs to the Rotary Club of Siluo. In order to respect their kindness, we need to keep good management, always keeping it clean, not smoking inside the building, etc.
* We will use bicycles as the main transportation tool during the project so make sure you have no problems in riding one. * We will cook by ourselves but still have opportunity to eat in the local restaurants or packed meals. * Internet can be available in Louyoung Foundation office, backpacker house and Volunteer House. * There is no washing machine, so let’s enjoy washing clothes by hand!

« I would recommend participating in a workcamp, especially with VAP, who ensured that I found a project to suit me and provided essential training for me in preparation for my trip. Being part of a workcamp really is a life-changing experience, oh, and it looks great on your CV! »
