Martyrs Memorial Park situated on the top of a small hill near Hetauda City in the Makwanpur District, about 120KM from Kathmandu. This is the first of such kind of public park in Nepal established by the local initiative of the Hetauda Municipality. We are organizing International Workcamps there to help in the construction and design of the park since 2000.
Work:
FFN started to build a multi-purpose project there since 2002. Now this building construction work is in its final stage. We have taken it as a model workcamp project. It will be a house build by volunteers. We are also developing an attractive garden around the building. Besides this volunteers help in the day to day work in the park, ie. gardening, cleaning of picnic spots, feeding animals in the mini zoo, selling entrance tickets, etc.
Food and Accommodation:
FFN arranges accommodation in private rented or community houses. A shower will be available at the camp house, but not the standard you are used to in your country. Nepalese daily food is Dal Bhat - Dal (soup of lentil or beans), Bhat (cooked rice), Tarkari (cooked vegetables). This is the staple diet of the Nepalese and it is eaten everyday. The camp leader will try to offer some different food but if you would like to enjoy your native meals please bring food from your own country. Volunteers will help to prepare meals in turns.
Travel:
All volunteers travel together from Kathmandu to the camp site at Hetauda. FFN manage the group travelling to the workcamp place. Therefore volunteers need to arrive one day before the camp date. If volunteers come late, he or she will travel alone but FFN will help to catch the right transportation. A public bus takes about 6 hours to get to Hetauda.
Meeting Point:
FFN office in Thamel. We are sorry to mention that we can't pick up all volunteers at the airport due to entrance difficulties at the arrivals of Tribhuvan International airport in Katmandu. If volunteers stay at least one night in Hotel Encounter Nepal or Pilgrim Guest House they are agreed to pick up our volunteers in nominal cost (Rs 500/ Euro 6) and offer an economy room (Euro 6 to up depend on facility in the room). Therefore volunteers are requested to send their arrival information to us in time so that we can ask Hotel Encounter Nepal or Pilgrim Guest House to reserve a room and pick you up. There is also the possibility to stay in FFN training center located in a peaceful area close to Ring road. The training center can offer a dormitory for Euro 5 + Airport pick up for Euro 5.
Camp Fee:
Euro 170 to be paid upon arrival to FFN.
Orientation Day:
One day before the first day of the project at 3pm in FFN office.
Extra Activities:
Trekking of Daman Hill (About 2500mt.), Jungle Safari in Chitwan National Park (70 km), Hetauda industrial city tour. Costs are one night stay and food in Daman about Euro 20; Chitwan National Park, Euro 60 for one night/two days programme including food and accommodation in a tourist resort.
« I would recommend participating in a workcamp, especially with VAP, who ensured that I found a project to suit me and provided essential training for me in preparation for my trip. Being part of a workcamp really is a life-changing experience, oh, and it looks great on your CV! »
