The Childcare Centre of Mongolia (CCM) is the only fully government-funded orphanage in Mongolia. The orphanage was established in 1974. It started as a nursery cum pre-school and later in 1979, expanded to providing facilities for older children. The pre-school kids range between 3-6 years old and the older kids, between 6-18 years. Pre-school and School children live in two separate places in Ulaanbaatar. The school age kids place we call ‘Orphanage’ and it is a 3-storey building and house. ‘Pre-school’ kids place we call kindergarden and they live in a single storey building.
There are currently a total of 300 children comprising approximately 150 younger kids and 150 older kids. 35 teachers and 50 staff run the Centre. The children live in a very deprived environment. Facilities and living space are limited. The main concern are the food and education facilities as they rely heavily on fundings from the government. Some small plots of land are available for the Centre to cultivate vegetables to feed the kids in an area called Buhug River. The older 30 children of the Orphanage, who are aged between 12-16, work there during the 3 months of the summer. They produce vegetables such as carrots, radishes, onions, etc. which are just enough for their meals during the whole year...they keep them 4 metres under the ground for one year...that is quite magic! The vegetables are purely organic and very tasty and the children are obviously very friendly.
Since 2000, volunteers from all over the world have been participating in summer programs designed to improve the kids' vegetable farm. Volunteers will help out there.
Work:
We will work together with the orphans aged 12-15 to remove the weeds in the field. It will be a quite tiring task but let's enjoy it with them! Around 30 children come here during the summer holidays which are between June and August. The main task will be to help the Orphanage’s vegetable farm. Weeding wild plants, watering the farm and the trees, etc. Volunteers will also organise sporting and cultural activities with the children.
Accommodation:
Volunteers will stay at a ger (traditional Mongolian tent). Sleeping bag needed. Self-catering with help of a local staff.
Location:
Buhug is located at 45 km from Ulaanbaatar. The sight is just unbelievably beautiful, a typical Mongolian plain.
Terminal:
Ulaanbaatar, Chinggis Khaan International airport or International train station of Ulaanbaatar (MCE can organise a pick up service for volunteers).
Qualifications:
To like children and to be flexible/adaptable. Mongolian speakers are welcome!

Organised together between the Mongolian workCamps Exchange (MCE) and NICE Japan since 2007.
CCM (Childcare Center of Mongolia) is an orphanage where about 300 children live and study together in a big farm. NICE Japan would like to open workcamps not only to the youth, but also to elderly people in order to make better use of their experience in the society. The first project was done with MCE in 2007 and 2008 successfully, so we will do it again!

« I would recommend participating in a workcamp, especially with VAP, who ensured that I found a project to suit me and provided essential training for me in preparation for my trip. Being part of a workcamp really is a life-changing experience, oh, and it looks great on your CV! »
