Newly organized together with Dinggai Long House (LLH). NICE has been organizing workcamps in Malaysia since 2004 and Borneo island since 2005. This mountainous area with indigenous Iban people have quite sufficient economic standard, but depopulation of youth is a quite serious problem. Since 2006, the workcamps in Chabo Long House (CLH) constructed a fish pond, renovated roads, etc. and then, this LLH has been introduced by CLH where the missions of the workcamps have been somehow completed.
Work:
We will cement the drains of the surroundings of the long house since it creates a lot of bad smells and worse a sanitary condition. We may do other necessary work for community development as well as World Tanabata Action and Eco Sponge Action. So, be flexible to do anything needed.
Study theme:
Future plan of workcamps in the long house and global cooperation for it.
Accommodation:
Home stay in the long houses (1-2 vols. in each family). Meals provided.
Location:
A small village in the jungle of Sarawak state, 6 hours by boat and car from Kuching. 2 km from the nearest town and we can enjoy to exchange with local cheerful Iban people with unique culture.
Terminal:
Kuching. You will need to arrive by 21:00 on Aug. 11th and can leave after 06:00 on Aug. 26th.
Leisure activities:
Exchange parties with Iban dance and drink, jungle trekking and barbeque, etc.
Skills required:
High motivation to work and respect to the local culture and way of the local organization! Quite hard (very limited choices) for vegetarian! Don’t expect to “help the poor”!
Participation Fee:
400 RM (about 130 US$) to be paid on your arrival.
