The special non-profit organization Fuku-Kan-Net(FKN) is a citizens' organization dedicated to deepening the understanding of South Korea's language, culture, economy, and history. It also seeks to develop mutual understanding and friendship among Japanese and Korean through exchange activities. From now on we want to have international exchange not just between Japan and Korea, but also between Japan and the West (Europe and America).

As a program that widens the international perspectives of the region's children, youth, and residents, we have special courses about international understanding. By promoting international exchange through sports, we make opportunities that are touched by foreign language and culture. We want to improve/update our current courses, and create new courses and programs. But on May 11th 2011, they suffered really huge damaged caused by the earthquake and radioactive leak. Fukushima has been hit by harmful rumuors still now. FKN expects volunteer from abroad, for example, who can cheer up the people in Fukushima.

NICE is a non-government and non-profit organisation formed on the 4th February 1990 to organise volunteer projects in Japan and East Asia. In Sepember 1990, the first international project in Japan was held at the foot of the Mt. Fuji.
NICE has 1,253 full members and 8,957Associate and 8 Organizational members. It is run by 10 / full time &10-15voluntary/ part time staff together with over 300 active members. The General Assembly/ Executive Committee of NICE is held twice to six times a year.
NICE has over 150 partner organisations in 100 countries &over 200 local project partner NGOs in Japan.
The aims of NICE are to:

promote exciting voluntary actions by fresh ideas and mobility, to shift the world into more healthy ways for both nature and people.

te create opportunities to meet new people and to start new actions by involving many local people. We make bridges between isolated non-profit organisations and local people, and invite youth to depopulated areas.

NICE runs the following main activities
International short term projects(1-3 weeks) mostly in Japan, e.g. in 2009 106 projects in 18 countries with 858 international volunteers. Sending Japanese volunteers to international projects, 622 volunteers to 53 countries in 2009 . Weekend projects (1-3 days projects) with Japanese volunteers in Japan (148 projects in 19 prefectures with 1,672 volunteers in 2009). Long and Medium Term Projects for 2 -12 months in Japan and overseas. In 2009 NICE hosted 29 projects in 4 countries with 87 volunteers and sent 84 volunteers to 20 countries. Group projects (18 projects in 5 countries in 2009) and many other ecological/ social/educational actions such as Green Foster Parents, Sister School Project, Notebook action, etc.
The running cost (staff, offices, etc.) is sourced mainly from the fees from members and volunteers. The project costs such as food, accommodation, of international projects in Japan are provided mainly by local partners from their own budgets, local governments, sponsoring foundations, etc. Costs of projects in other Asian countries and weekend projects are paid mainly by volunteers. What is LMTV (LMTI/ LMTW) project?
LMTV (Long and Middle Term Volunteer) project is a voluntary service project for 6 weeks or more, in the definition of NICE and NVDA (Network for Voluntary Development in Asia). LTV (Long Term Volunteers) is for 6 months or more and MTV (Middle Term Volunteers) is between 6 weeks and 6 months, but LTV and MTV are usually called together as LMTV.
NICE categorizes LMTV projects into:

LMTI (Long and Middle Term Individual voluntary projects): These are LMTV projects with one or two volunteers. LMTW (Long and Middle Term Workcamps) which are LMTV projects with more than two volunteers.
Age limit From 18 (No maximum) Language English and / or Japanese depending on the projects. InsuranceWe provide small insurance only for accidents during the projects IN JAPAN. AccommodationBasic, but enjoyable enough. But in many of LMTI, we provide a single room.
Application procedure
All applicants need to send the application forms with motivation letters. Volunteers living outside Japan need to apply through our partner organisations of their countries.
If you apply for LMTI which requires speaking good Japanese, you will need to call the NICE office to have a telephone interview. Calling date/ time and the phone number will be informed by NICE to your sending NGO after NICE will have received your application form.
Soon after having got the answer from the local host, NICE will inform your sending NGO if you have been accepted or not by e-mail. It usually takes 1 - 4 weeks.
One month before the project starts, volunteers will receive an Information Sheet giving details of the project, what to bring, the meeting point, how to get there, etc.
Volunteers need to pay the travel cost to/ from the projects. Meals and accommodation during the projects are provided by NICE &the local partners. There is a Program fee of 10.000 Yen per month to be paid by the volunteer on arrival. However some projects in Japan provide pocket money.
If the final destination of your flight is not Tokyo/ Osaka, you need to book the flight to make a stop-over in Tokyo or Osaka to join the Preparation and Evaluation Seminars. You need to arrive at Tokyo/ Osaka the day before the Seminar starts. It is possible to stay in the houses of NICE members if you ask us early enough. Volunteers should not expect so much time for sightseeing during the projects, so if you want to do it, please take enough days before and or after the projects.
You can come to Japan as a tourist without a visa from most of western/ central European countries, USA, Canada, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, NZ, and many Latin American countries. As a tourist usually, you can stay in Japan for 3 months. Volunteers from the UK and Ireland can stay up to six months. One year working visas are another possibility.
NICE organizes compulsory Preparation and Evaluation Seminars for LMTVs. These take place over three days with 20-40 participants. During these Seminars the volunteers will share positive/ negative impact of their service to both local communities and their own personal development. They will also share the future proposals to their projects as well as their next life plan with filling in the evaluation form and if possible, making the Project report with some pictures. The retiring volunteers have the opportunity to instruct their replacements.
