ASA PKBI is one of the Indonesian NGOs concerned with street children with main focus on HIV/AIDS and STI (Sexual Transmited Infections) prevention as well as providing information about drugs to youth at high schools and pesantren (moslem educational institutions for youth).
Project:
Organised together with ASA PKBI, the volunteers will work on the issues of street children in Semarang. It will be very interesting to get to know the real life of the children and their families. Volunteers will help with skills development, medical check ups, charity events and other activities organised for the children that aim to reduce the time they spend on the streets. Opportunities also for school visits and radio broadcasting on HIV/AIDS, STI and educational material about the dangers of drug abuse and other addictive substances.
Work:
1) Helping ASA PKBI organising activities together with street children such as English classes, playing music, skills development, counselling and guidance, HIV/AIDS prevention, drugs and alcohol abuse prevention, medical check ups, etc. 2) Planning coming activities with IIWC concerning the street children.
Accommodation:
At a boarding house or host family provided by IIWC.
Location:
Semarang, Central Java.
Language:
English. Obviously some knowledge of Indonesian will be very useful to communicate with the street children.

Semarang Ahmad Yani Airport.
Special Remarks:
It is important that volunteers can be easy going, independent, physically and mentally strong, interested in children issues, creative and easy to get along with children, having special skills like playing a music instrument, enjoy playing simple games, and be ready to work in slum areas with poor children (sometimes both physically and mentally disabled) and with their families.
Hosting Fee:
US$100 per month that should be paid in advance based on the period of staying. This fee is covering administration costs, information and support in obtaining visa before arrival, transportation from IIWC office to ASA PKBI when you start your project, orientation session, evaluation session, project coordinator, personal supervisor and educational material useful for your project, if necessary. Accommodation will be provided by IIWC and the volunteer has to provide his/her own meals.
Please note that volunteers should bear their personal expenses, visa extensions for Rp. 270.000, - each month and bear health insurance by themselves. No pocket money provided.
HIV/AIDS is threatening Indonesia with a number of estimated cases of 130,000 and only 3,624 cases reported. There are many factors hindering the prevention of the disease like the low education level of people about HIV/AIDS and how it is transmited, a serious drug abuse problem, a booming sex industry, high STI rates, a large mobile labour pool and a local reluctance to using condoms. The problem is getting bigger, the number is increasing and it is time for everybody to act preventing the disease.
Project:
Organised together with Kalandara, an NGO concerned with the prevention of HIV/AIDS by giving guidance to workers related with HIV/AIDS, the project will highlight the education of STI (Sexually Transmitted Infections) and HIV/AIDS by promoting using condoms among those workers, spreading out information on STI and HIV/AIDS and organising activities related to the prevention actions.
Work:
1) Helping Kalandara organising activities together with workers in preventing HIV/AIDS. 2) Helping IIWC to plan the coming activities related to the HIV/AIDS prevention movement.
Accommodation:
At a boarding house or host family provided by IIWC.

Jalan Dr Wahidin, Semarang, Central Java.
Language:
English. Obviously that some Indonesian will do a great help especially in meeting the labor force for educational purposes.

Special Remarks:
Volunteers should have an interest in HIV/AIDS prevention issues, be flexible, have sufficient knowledge about HIV/AIDS, to be easy to get along with others, hard working and able to plan activities independently.
