There is a water well near the school which is used for drinking water as well as cooking and bathing by the local people.

Mnkhanya Community Resources Board (CRB) is the custodian of all the community led projects and initiatives that are undertaken within the Chiefdom of Chief Mnkhanya. Under their care is the community school, a hammer mill for grinding corn into meal, and wild life management as part of the South Luangwa National Park lies in their vicinity. The Youth Association of Zambia has been working with the Community Resources Board since 2005. The community together with the Youth Association of Zambia has constructed a two classroom block, one office, two store rooms and two houses for teachers. The community has been hosting volunteers since the mid 90s and to date YAZ has sent four volunteers to the community.
PROJECT:
In the past the Long Term Volunteer project has been accepting volunteers mostly for the school and the wild life areas. Starting in October, 2011 the Community Resources Board and YAZ sat and decided on a new project that will be an addition to the two existing projects. The resources board has embarked on a pig rearing project. This project was initiated because both YAZ and the CRB had seen the need for sustainable volunteer development projects that benefit the wider community and whose impact is positive, effective and longer lasting. The volunteers applying for this LTV project do not necessary need to have skills or schooling in pig rearing as they will be more managers of this project than agricultural experts. However, people with farming or general agricultural expertise are encouraged to apply. Therefore, volunteers can still apply for work at the school, but will be expected to do a bit of work at the piggery for the continuance of the project. The other project, the school, calls for volunteers with a basic knowledge in education or teaching.

« I would recommend participating in a workcamp, especially with VAP, who ensured that I found a project to suit me and provided essential training for me in preparation for my trip. Being part of a workcamp really is a life-changing experience, oh, and it looks great on your CV! »
