Volunteers will be helping most challenged young women to learn English in order to increase their performance in schools. Unemployed young women will take part in these classes as well to open up for future carers. Extra activities will be given hand on the preparation of the annual festival known as Mwakakogwa.
Study Theme:
Discussions, visits and workshops will be organized learn about the position of women in access education, challenges they are facing and how education can promote gender equality and equity in today’s’ society. Please bring information from your local community for sharing.
Leisure:
Beach /swimming and snorkeling; historical sites tours; spice tour; Jozani National park and tradition dance. There will also be the option of participating in Mwakakogwa festival - see http://www.mzuri-kaja.or.tz/mwaka.html
Accommodation:
Volunteers will be accommodated at a community residential house. Mattresses will be laid down and volunteers will share rooms. There will be water, toilets and bathrooms available. Kindly pay attention to the material you need to bring to make your accommodation more comfortable and convenient for your needs. The project will have a full time staff to prepare meals for the volunteers. Vegetarian meals will be available and if you are having other special health/dietary needs please inform the Project leader on arrival.
Orientation:
On arrival, volunteers will receive one or two full days of orientation to enable them to become familiar with the culture of the community, understanding various policies governing the programme, sharing fears and expectations, participating in team building activities etc. At the end of the project, volunteers are expected to participate in an evaluation which normally is organised in a participatory way (open discussion) and also by filling in a questionnaire.
Hosting costs applicable to UVIKIUTA projects:
Pick up service from airport to city centre/UVIKIUTA centre - US$30 (Optional). Accommodation at UVIKIUTA centre before or after the project (bed and breakfast) - US$10 (Optional). Pick up from the meeting point in town to UVIKIUTA centre - US$10. Orientation fee for each project - US$30. Project participation fee - US$300 Transport from UVIKIUTA to the hosting community - US$40
(Nb Project participation fee includes food and accommodation during the workcamp).
Volunteers will participate in construction of a local secondary school to enable more children and especially girls to have access to education. Activities will include, bricks making, and making walls. In the afternoon volunteers will help in organising various activities for out of school young girls like sports, games, songs traditional dances etc.
Study theme:
Women and Girl Child empowerment will be the main area of study during this project. Volunteers will have an opportunity to visit various women groups, girls in school and out of school and learn about the social, economic and political reality. Guest speakers will be invited as well to make presentation on the key issues on gender equality and equity in Tanzania. How can some culture hinder or promote gender equality? Next year Tanzania is going on general election and there is discussion of having 50% members in the National parliament and local council. Kindly do a bit of research and bring some information about the subject from your own country for sharing.
Leisure:
Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Tarangire National parks and Ngorongoro crater; Rungwa Game Reserve; historical sites; cultural tourism including Maasai village.
