The inhabitants are Kuria speaking people residing in the south west of Kenya. Their main economic activity is farming, where farmers grow tobacco, maize, beans, sweet potatoes and other horticultural crops for sale. Cattle and goat trade also take place but the volume of trade has gone very low owing to the incessant cases of cattle rustling between the Kuria people and the Maasai and Kipsigis of the neighbouring Trans Mara district. The area has low levels of literacy especially among people aged from 35 years and above.
BACKGROUND OF THE SCHOOL:
Remanyanki Primary School was started for the purposes of acquiring knowledge and skills necessary to enable young generation make informed decisions considering their low level of illiteracy and more so to empower the girl child on the consequences of Female Genital Mutilation.
THEME:
GIRL CHILD EDUCATION Girls are plucked from a classroom to be forcefully married and in most cases, the affected school children are primary school children. "It is unfortunate that while other communities are discarding traditions that drag down their socio-economic development, the Kuria community still embraces the custom of marrying off their children. It is something that should be stopped because it denies the girls child the right to education." After realizing that the Kenyan government was taking stringent measures on parents engaging their children in forced marriages, some members of the community often cross into neighbouring Tanzania where they perform the marriage rituals before crossing back to Kenya. The Kenya government has outlawed forced teenage marriages and its perpetrators can be jailed. What makes teenage marriages especially appalling is that it burdens the young girls with responsibilities that they are ill-prepared for. This includes child bearing and the concomitant hustles of taking care of children. The culture has been a detriment to the girl child and as a result fewer girls have the urge to continue with their education as they will be married off before they complete their education. The future of girls among the Kuria in the district remains bleak unless the culture is done away with.

Wajir is a town in North Eastern Province, Kenya. It is headquarters of Wajir District. The latest census of Wajir reports a population of 32,207. Wajir is located in an arid area prone to drought. In spring 2006 there was a severe famine. Four new districts were created in August 2007. They are Wajir East, Wajir South, Wajir North and Wajir West. All have new headquarters and new district commissioners.
Education - Wajir county has ten secondary schools six of which are located at Wajir East district some of the schools include Wajir high school, Wajir girls high, Furaha high, Waberi mixed day secondary school. Wajir are people are generally ascribed by the local inhabitants to the Madanle, a semi-legendary people of high stature, who are associated with the Somali.
It is served by Wajir Airport with flights to Nairobi, Galcaio and Mogadishu.
BACKGROUD OF WAJIR PRIMARY SCHOOL:
Wajir primary school was started so as to have the pastoral community’s children go to school. Wajir is a dry area and children preferred to move with their cattle from one place to the other in search of pastures instead of going to school. With the recent drought, they no longer have their large herds of cattle and people even in their late teens are attending school as this is the only way they can get food as schools receive relief food from the government.
THEME:
PEACE BUILDING AND CONFLICT TRANSFORMATION Remote and arid, Wajir County is largely barren. Somalis are divided into three major clans: Ogaden, Ajuran and Degodia and several smaller ones. They are nomadic pastoralists, shifting herds of camels, cattle, sheep and goats to wherever pasture and water can be found. Competing with each other for access to skimpy resources has made suspicions run deep. The mere blocking of access to an animal water pan, or a problem between market vendors, can have an effect akin to applying a match to dry leaves. Over the years, political interference by outsiders has added to the tension. Frequent droughts compounded the resource scarcity problem cited as root cause of chronic mistrust between clans and other groups. In recent years, that atmosphere of tension and mistrust has changed. It all began in the early nineties when a discussion by a small group of women attending a wedding - giving vent to concerns about violence - spontaneously gathered momentum and developed into a movement. The Wajir Peace Group formed then to encourage dialogue among the warring parties, has since evolved into the Wajir Peace and Development Committee, showing the value of encouraging community involvement, and the use of dialogue to resolve conflicts. Volunteers will work with Wajir Peace Group in addressing the issue of peace.
WORK:
Volunteers will work for six hours daily from Mondays to Fridays. Volunteers will be involved in awareness on peace building initiatives, workshops, digging of a well, fencing and teaching as well as go for home visits in the local community.

Gender Sensitivity - Focus on Female Genital Mutilation
Camp Language:
English
THE COMMUNITY:
The community consists of Kuria speaking ethnic group. The Kuria people are mainly agriculturalists and pastoralist, with the Kenyan Kurians leaning towards agriculture and the Tanzanian Kurians more towards pastoralism. The Kuria are closely related to the Kisii people of Kenya both in language and physique. They are said to have been a one people until a vicious attack by the Maasai in the early 19th century scattered both populations in different directions. This apartness has led to the formation of distinct dialects which are clearly understood by both peoples. The Kuria people are divided into about 16 "sub tribes".
BACKGROUND OF NYAMANCHE PRIMARY SCHOOL:
The school was begun in 1982 and it is a public school. It is sponsored by Marana the mission of Kenya. The school has a population of 584 students with 282 girls and 302 boys. The school was started with the aim of having members of the community have access to education and more so the girl child. In this community, differences between man and woman dictate a difference in their social roles and this reinforces a notion that men are more superior to women. Capacity building will provide both men and women with political insight and moral support in confronting gender issues. A woman’s social status has led to marginalization. This was the very reason of starting the school so as to empower the girl child.
THEME:
FOCUS ON FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION Female genital mutilation is a strong tradition in this community. It is illegal. But still more than one third of the women are circumcised and each and every young woman is subjected to the cut. The church has preached against FGM for decades but in spite of the deep devoutness the priests do not have enough power over the souls. FGM has nothing to do with religion; it is a so-called culture and tradition in certain groups. The practice is deeply rooted in views on chastity, transition to womanhood, “purity” for marriage and basically a wish to control women sexually. In certain areas the survival and fertility of the local community is assumed to be threatened if the girls are not circumcised. Many brave young girls who refuse FGM are regarded as ”unmarriageable” and become outcasts. It is a brutal act, painful and has led to the spread of HIV/AIDS. Volunteers will be required to liaise with other Non Governmental organizations like Red Cross in creation of awareness to the community.
WORK:
Volunteers will work for six hours daily from Mondays to Fridays. They will be involved sensitize the community on the side effects of FGM, sand harvesting, carrying stones, fencing, construction of classrooms, general clean ups and home visits.
ACCOMMODATION:

The community comprises of Taita speaking people. The community lies on the edge of Tsavo National Park. The Taita people are a Bantu tribe living in the Taita Hills on Kenya's southwest, near the Tanzania border and surrounding plains. What is known as the Taita tribe actually consists of three separate but closely-related tribes: Wadawida (or Taita), Wasaghala (Sagalla) and Wataveta (Taveta). The languages of these three tribes are very similar to each other and to the Swahili language. The languages also bear some similarity to the language spoken by the Chagga people of Tanzania. The Wadawida tribe is the largest of the three, numbering about 300,000 people as of the last population census. The Taita hills consist of three main hills: Dawida, Saghala, and Kasighau. Dawida is by far the most massive, fertile, and densely populated area of the Taita tribe. The Wadawida living on the slopes of this hill practice different forms of agriculture, selling the bulk of the food they produce. One very unique aspect of Taita culture is the respect accorded to the dead. In the past, when a person died, they were buried for a period of about one year, at which time their body would be exhumed. The skull would be severed from the rest of the body and taken to a sacred cave - their "proper" abode with the ancestors. While this is no longer practiced today, the caves where the skulls can still be found are treated as sacred in many parts of Taita.
BACKGROUND OF GHAZI PRIMARY SCHOOL:
